Preparing for a smooth moove

Organising removals, utilities, and home insurance before moving day

With completion day approaching, now is the time to get organised. Booking removals, setting up utilities, and arranging home insurance in advance can help make your move as smooth as possible.

To make things easier, Open Moove has partnered with trusted providers for each of these services - helping you save time, money, and stress.

Removals: book early to avoid last-minute stress!

Booking a trusted removals company well in advance ensures you get the best price and availability. Whether you’re hiring a full-service team or renting a van, here’s what to consider:

Compare quotes – Get estimates from multiple companies to find the best deal.

Decide on the level of service – Full packing, part packing, or just transport?

Check insurance coverage – Make sure your belongings are protected during the move.

Confirm your moving date – Some companies charge extra for last-minute bookings.

💡 Tip: Moving midweek is often cheaper than weekends, as demand is lower.

Utilities: set them up before you move in!

Once you move in, you don’t want to be stuck without electricity, water, or broadband. Sorting out utilities before completion prevents disruption.

Gas & electricity – Contact your current supplier to close your account and compare new tariffs for your new home.

Broadband & TV – Some providers take two to three weeks to set up, so arrange this early.

Council tax – Notify your local council of your move to avoid any overpayments.

Water supply – Check if your new home is on a metered or unmetered water system.

💡 Tip: If you don’t switch energy suppliers, you’ll automatically be placed on a standard variable tariff, which is usually more expensive.

Home insurance: don’t leave it until the last minute!

Most mortgage lenders require buildings insurance to be in place on exchange of contracts, so arranging this early is crucial.

Buildings insurance – Covers structural damage from fires, floods, and other risks.

Contents insurance – Protects your personal belongings inside the home.

Combined policies – Many providers offer discounts for bundling buildings and contents insurance.

Check your mortgage lender’s requirements – Some lenders specify minimum cover amounts.

💡 Tip: Even if you’re a cash buyer, home insurance is still essential to protect your investment.
